Honda Recalls 1.2 Million SUVs with Bad Backup Cameras

Car backup cameras are by and large an extremely safe car gadget, reducing backing crashes by over 17%, according to the IIHS. However, the modern feature—mandated in cars since 2018—is not immune to malfunctions. Unfortunately, on June 15, 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled over 1 million Hondas due to an issue with their backing cameras. Why Are Hondas Being Recalled?
The NHTSA estimates that approximately 50% of the 1,198280 recalled Honda units feature a defective coaxial cable in their backup cameras. The official recall statement explains, “The Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured, resulting in deformed terminals and potentially causing poor, or lost, connections intermittently between the audio display unit and the vehicle cable connector.”
In short, the power to the infotainment screen system may cut in and out, and some Honda owners have reported instances in which their screens stopped working, even after power was restored. Affected infotainment screens may also flicker or make popping and/or crackling sounds. Unfortunately, this is not one of those car problems you can fix yourself.
Which Honda Models Are Being Recalled?
Honda is recalled all of the following models and model years:
- 2018-2023 Honda Odysseys
- 2019-2022 Honda Pilots
- 2019-2023 Honda Passports
Though Honda only observed these specific backup camera failures earlier this year, the company has dealt with similar screen and cable issues for years. According to Autoweek, in 2019, they received a report outlining flickering screen issues, which they attempted to fix by asking their cable supplier to extend the length of the coaxial cable in 2020 models. The company also tried installing waterproof couplers in the Odyssey, Pilot and Passport models. When neither of these methods solved the issue, they extended the warranty on affected 2021 models.
What Do I Do If my Honda Is Recalled?
If your Honda model is affected, the company will notify you between July 24 and August 4. According to Honda’s filing with the NHTSA, the company will fix affected models and their backup cameras at no cost to the owners, ensuring that driving a Honda continues to be safe and enjoyable.
After receiving their notification, Honda owners will be able to go to Honda dealerships, where experts will install an improved cable harness between the car’s existing terminal connections and a straightening cover over the cable connector. The company expects these additions to stabilize the cable connection. In the meantime, you can always purchase a mountable backup camera (or any of these other cool car tech add-ons!).
